Lilo and Stitch

Lilo lives with her older sister Nani on the Hawaiian Islands. She adopts what she thinks is a dog and names him Stitch. Unbeknown to Lilo, Stitch is actually from an alien planet, where he escaped from after an experiment went wrong.

Two bungling aliens have been sent to earth to recapture Stitch, who causes havoc everywhere he goes. Lilo strongly believes in "ohana," the Hawaiian tradition of family, and soon Stitch begins to understand this, and learns to care for someone else apart from himself.

When the film was in the early stages of story development, Stitch was to land in rural Kansas and interact with animals. After animation president Thomas Schumacher suggested that Stitch should interact with people instead, director Chris Sanders went away on vacation to Hawaii, and the story moved to the beach. This was the first of Disney's animated features since Dumbo to use watercolor painted backgrounds, although it uses computer colored digital cels rather than hand-painted cels.
