During the summer of 2009, Disney brought together several of their stars to develop an initiative that stresses the environmental issues that are going on in the world.  This initiative is called Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green.

Throughout the summer Disney Channel has been playing Public Service Announcements, giving viewers all sorts of information regarding how they can get involved and help preserve the planet.  The biggest, (and most empowering) part of the initiative is that the kids who “reg and pledge” to be apart of Project Green will have the opportunity to decide how Disney will invest $1 million to lots of different environmental programs.

To date Disney has given $260,000 to the following programs the kids have voted on:

• $10,000 to Arbor Day Foundation

• $25,000 to help end deforestation in Oyamel Forest

• $25,000 CHF Int’l to decrease pollution and deforestation in Rwanda – they send fuel-efficient stoves to the area

• $50,000 tropical forests in Philippines

• $50,000 used in SBNFA’s children’s forest to plant new trees by kids

• $100,000 Wildlife Conservation Society to protect artic wildlife from climate change

Debuting at #20 on the Billboard Top 100 charts this past week was the song “Send It On,” which is the theme song for Friends for Change.  Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus perform the song “Send It On.”  The single and video (which is currently #1 on the music video list) can be purchased on iTunes and the proceeds will be going to a variety of charities.
