Castaway Cay (pronounced Key) is Disney’s very own private island, located near Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas, and used exclusively as a stop off for Disney Cruise passengers.
The pier was specially constructed by Disney to allow the ships to sail right into dock rather than using tender boats to ferry passengers ashore.
When you first look out of your stateroom on Castway Cay day you may well find that you have already docked, and you’ll see one of two views, depending on which side of the ship you’re on.
Once the Island’s Cast Members are ready you’ll hear an announcement over the ship’s tannoy saying that guests can make their way downstairs to disembark the ship.
One of the ship’s photographers will be on hand to capture your photo (should you wish) in front of the ship. You can see the photo, and any others taken on the island, later in the day onboard in Shutters.
Marge’s Barges is on the left as you walk from the ship, and is where some excursions, such as parasailing, leave from. If you’re on an excursion later in the day that leaves from Marge’s Barges, make sure you allow enough time to get back here.
On the right is the Castaway Cay Post Office, where you can send a postcard with the exclusive Castaway Cay postmark. Opening hours are limited, and stamps must be paid for with cash.
The Flying Dutchman ship from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie is anchored in the lagoon.
From here you can either take the short 10 minute walk to the family beach or catch one of the trams that run frequently. The tram drops off next to Scuttle’s Cove, across from the Boat Beach. Most amenities are located in this area – Family Beach, Sports Beach, Cookie’s BBQ, Boat rentals, Bicycle rentals. As part of the Island’s 2010 enhancement program a new Pelican Point Tram Stop is being added further down the family beach.
For those with young kids Scuttles Cove is just on the right as you walk down or disembark the tram
Arriving at the family beach, this is the first bit of beautiful white sand you’ll encounter, and is where you can hire a selection of boats from which you can take out onto the lagoon.
There is plenty seating available on the family beach, although you’ll need to arrive early if you want to grab a shady spot.
The water within the roped off areas is safe to swim in and lifeguards are always on duty. Inner tubesand floats are available to rent.
A new water play feature has recently been added that’s within swimming distance from shore. Pelican Plunge is a floating platform featuring two water slides, plus water canons, and a huge “bucket dump” that soaks guests below.
Check your Personal Navigator that day for a schedule of events and character greetings on the Island. You may get to dance in the sunshine at a party with the characters, held just next to the family beach!
Adults can purchase (using the stateroom key card) an ice cold beer or specialty cocktail at the Conched Out bar
Complimentary fresh fruit is available all day between the family beach and Cookie’s.
Lunch is also complimentary, all-you-care-to-eat, from Cookie’s BBQ and Cookies Too. Just grab a plate and help yourself!
The menu can vary slightly but normall includes ribs, roast chicken, burgers, grilled mahi mahi, salad, cookies, and cake. A beverage station is located nearby where free refills of soft drinks are on tap all day.
Covered and outdoor seating areas are available, with plenty seating for everyone.
If you’ve still got room left after lunch, grab a soft-serve ice cream!
Some familiar faces provide a fun photo opportunity!
Guests in search of Castaway Cay souvenirs need look no further than She Sells Sea Shells and Everything Else, and Buy the Sea Shore, right near the family beach. And anyone wanting a more authentic Bahamian souvenir can take a look at the Bahamian Retail store.
A selection of men’s, women’s and children’s bikes are available for hourly rental. They can be ridden along the island’s old runway up to Serenity Bay, and along special bike trails. A great way to see the more offbeat areas of the island, but best done in the early morning before the sun gets too hot.
Beyond the family beach is the Grouper Game Pavilion, an undercover area featuring a selection of games and activities.
From the family beach, guests can either take the tram or the leisurely 20 minute walk along the old airstrip to Serenity Bay adults only beach.
The same buffet lunch is available here as is at Cookie’s BBQ, and refreshments can be purchased from the Castaway Air Bar.
There’s so much to do at Castaway Cay you’ll feel like one day just isn’t enough! As you board the ship and wave goodbye, the island’s Cast Members (50 or so of who live permanently on the island, with the rest visiting from Great Abaco) will don their giant Mickey hands and wave goodbye.
