Mickey’s Toontown Fair opens for the very last time today, to make way for the Fantasyland expansion.

The Magic Kingdom land started out as Mickey’s Birthdayland in 1988, which was installed to celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 60th birthday. Once the celebrations were over its name was changed to Mickey’s Starland. It proved so popular that the Toontown overlay was soon developed and Mickey’s Toontown Fair was born in 1996.

The official home to Mickey and Minnie, the land is aimed at children, although you’d often see adults getting as much enjoyment from touring the houses!

The land is different to others in the Park. Everything you see is much more fanciful, as if you’d stepped right into a cartoon.

Mickey and Minnie’s houses were the crowd-pleasers, filled with whimsy, hidden Mickeys and humor.

One worries for Mickey and Minnie now they are effectively homeless! The mice will continue with meet and greets throughout the Magic Kingdom, before moving to Town Square Exposition Hall in spring.

Princess and Fairy fans needn’t worry as the closure of the Toontown Hall of Fame, as the princesses will be joining Mickey and Minnie, and Tinker Bell will relocate to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

We also say goodbye to Donald’s Boat, one of the lesser attractions, but fun for kids nonetheless. Little ones could hop aboard The Miss Daisy, let off some steam and get wet in the process!

Toontown Station will be closed during the expansion works, and will presumably get a new name once it reopens.

The only attraction to remain will be the Barnstormer at Goofy’s Wiseacre Farm. A kid-size coaster which will be part of the new Storybook Circus area, and will get a bright new look, featuring Goofy as The Great Goofini.

Whilst I am looking forward to the new Fantasyland, I do feel sad that future generations won’t get the chance to visit Mickey & Minnie’s houses.

The Fantasyland expansion is being completed in phases, with most new attractions open by 2013.
