There are about 500 duty-free shops on St Maarten; prices are around 25% to 50% below those in the US. On the Dutch side of St Maarten, the best buys are jewelry and watches. Make sure you try the local guavaberry liqueur.
Loose gemstones are exempt from customs duties when re-entering the US.
