LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Disney struck box office gold with its "Enchanted" film musical, the top draw of the three-day holiday weekend, according to industry estimates Sunday.
The fairy-tale musical of a princess from a magical kingdom cast into the evil streets of New York City opened with an estimated 35.3 million dollars over the three-day weekend period.
The film grossed just over 50 million dollars over the five days of an extended holiday weekend, for the second-highest Thanksgiving holiday opening after "Toy Story 2" in 1999, according to Exhibitor Relations.
"Enchanted" outpaced a slew of holiday-themed movies, including "This Christmas" about an African-American family in Los Angeles, which debuted in second place with 18.6 million dollars over the three-day weekend and 27.1 million dollars over five days.
"Beowulf," based on the thousand-year-old English legend and starring Angelina Jolie, claimed third place with a 16.2 million dollar take over the three-day weekend.
Rounding out the top 12 films were:
"Hitman," a video game-inspired action flick which debuted in fourth place, earning 13 million dollars over the three-day weekend.
"Bee Movie," the computer-animated comedy about a young bee in search of a job outside of the drudgery of the hive, which earned 12 million dollars.
The Christmas-season timed "Fred Claus," earning 10.7 million dollars.
"August Rush," the sentimental story of a musically gifted boy and his search for his musician parents, which took 9.4 million dollars in ticket sales, earning seventh place in its three-day weekend debut.
Ridley Scott's hard-hitting, Denzel Washington thriller "American Gangster" earned 9.2 million dollars over the three-day weekend.
"The Mist," a horror film based on a Stephen King tale, earned nine million dollars, debuting in ninth place.
"No Country for Old Men," earning 8.1 million dollars over the three-day weekend for tenth place.
"Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," a holiday movie about a magical toystore -- with Dustin Hoffman as the shop's 243-year-old owner and Natalie Portman as manager -- earned eight million dollars over the three-day weekend.
The number 12 movie, the comedy "Dan in Real Life," with Juliette Binoche and Steve Carell, earned 3.3 million dollars over the three-day weekend.
The top 12 films took in an estimated 153 million dollars over three days, -- 218 million dollars over five days, Exhibitor Relations said.
Final figures were to be released Monday.
