In Fantasyland at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, children and adults can let their imaginations ride like the wind as they dream of being princes and princesses atop prancing steeds, galloping toward the drawbridge of a magical castle.
Cinderella Carousel is an artful wonder -- 60 hand-painted horses and two chariots that adorn the revolving attraction which sits inside the courtyard of Sleeping Beauty Castle in Fantasyland.
Cinderella Carousel draws its inspiration from Disney's 1950 animated classic "Cinderella," the rags-to-riches tale of a poor, beautiful girl who eventually meets and falls in love with Prince Charming. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture and Best Song ("Bibbiddi-Bobbidi-Boo").
The design of Cinderella Carousel is a reproduction of King Arthur Carrousel at Disneyland in California. The horses, all of which are posed in various galloping positions, are made of fiberglass and custom-painted in special colors and designs created by Walt Disney Imagineering.
The horses themselves are painted in soft pastel tones made up of a broad palette of purples, teals and other fanciful colors. The "lead" horse has a flowing golden mane. The 60 horses and two chariots are arranged in 14 aisles with four horses each. The chariots feature side panels depicting the goddess of the cherubs playing her lyre and a winged cherub with a strand of garland.
The carousel is topped with a fanciful canopy featuring heraldic striping and jewel-toned colors inspired by the tournament tents of medieval tales. Emerging from the crown of the canopy is a pointed finial that also features an ornamental leaf motif and, below that, a crown (denoting the royal nature of the attraction).
On the inner upper rounding board, above the horses, are eight hand-painted animation-style vignettes, alternating with mirrors, that tell the story of Walt Disney's "Cinderella."
