Disney magic meets Disney music in a new three-dimensional (3-D) film spectacular in Fantasyland at the new Hong Kong Disneyland Park.
Called "Mickey's PhilharMagic," the indoor film attraction stars Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and other favorite Disney characters animated in three-dimensions -- with the added "fourth dimension" of astonishing in-theater effects that immerse guests in the on-screen environment.
Colorful characters appear to magically jump off the screen, thanks to special glasses guests wear that create and enhance the effect. Filmgoers will want to reach out to try and touch the characters as the 3-D images float off the screen and into the audience area.
An elaborate musical score accompanies the film to immerse guests in a stunning symphony environment. It is, in fact, the combination of the words "philharmonic" (a choir or orchestra that performs music) and "magic" that form the whimsical title of the attraction.
As for the on-screen antics of Mickey Mouse and his pals, while Mickey has starred in traditional "ink-and-paint animation" (hand-drawn and hand-painted) since his film debut in 1928, "Mickey's PhilharMagic" features the 'toon star in a way he's never before been seen -- in fully computer-generated animation.
In addition to Mickey Mouse, the "Mickey's PhilharMagic" cast of characters includes Donald Duck, Ariel from Disney's film "The Little Mermaid," Aladdin and Jasmine from Disney's "Aladdin," Peter Pan and Tinker Bell from the classic animated feature "Peter Pan," and Simba from Disney's animated classic film "The Lion King."
Set in Fantasyland, the eye-popping musical experience unfolds on the largest seamless screen ever created for a 3-D film, a 150-foot-wide canvas. Complete with in-theater effects, the attraction immerses guests in the richly animated world of Disney characters.
The attraction was produced through the combined efforts of Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Feature Animation.
While "Mickey's PhilharMagic" is the most advanced 3-D technology used in a Disney film, it's not the first time a Disney character has been presented in 3-D.
Since the early days of animation, the Walt Disney Company has created characters in 3-D, most notably in "Working for Peanuts," a 1953 Donald Duck/Chip 'n' Dale cartoon short. Because of its grand scale and groundbreaking technology, "Mickey's PhilharMagic" has created a new standard for 3-D effects and computer-animated magic.
Likewise, Disney has long been at the forefront of emerging theme park technology, leading the way in 3-D spectaculars around the world, and "Mickey's PhilharMagic" continues that tradition in classic Disney style. It is another groundbreaking way Disney theme parks immerse guests in the attractions.
"Mickey's PhilharMagic" surprises and delights guests with effects like a 3-D kiss from Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," and blasts of popping champagne corks while Lumiere from "Beauty and the Beast" belts out the classic song "Be Our Guest."
