Space Mountain

Many children dream of boarding a fanciful rocket ship and zooming through the cosmos, grabbing comets by the tail on a magical journey to the stars. Guests can now turn "science fiction" into "science fun" aboard Space Mountain, a space-themed indoor roller coaster at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Combining sensory effects, pulsating light, a twisting roller coaster track and a smooth, high-speed trip through a near-darkened expanse, Space Mountain is an adventure like none other.

Rising above the futuristic Tomorrowland scenery, the attraction's linear style of architecture provides a stark contrast to the lush, green mountains that surround Hong Kong Disneyland. The sleek, white exterior and giant, ribbed slopes form the gigantic cone-shaped structure.

The "mountain" shape is created by a series of sloping steel beams that form a gigantic sealed cone that rises more than 28 meters (91 feet) above ground level. The highest spire on top of the roof soars to nearly 41 meters (133 feet). A marvel of showmanship in construction and engineering, it is one of the most unusual and iconic architectural structures in the world and the tallest structure inside Hong Kong Disneyland Park.

Once inside the attraction queue, brave space explorers enter the man-made mountain past color-shifting planetoids floating all about. Probing deep into the mountain core, explorers enter the LaunchPort portal to board 12-passenger rocket pods. Each "rocket" is then set on the wild journey through the darkness of space and headlong into a meteor field.

Each vehicle has an on-board sound system that synchronizes music and sound effects with the racing rocket.

Jettisoning from the boarding station, the guests' rocket ships swirl through a sea of pulsing neon lights and begin a rapid ascent to the launch area known as the Hypergate. "Spatial-effects" lighting sprinkle the inner heavens with galaxies of stars, darting meteors and glowing nebulae as the wild, cosmic voyage commences.

Void of outside light, the darkness of space seems to grow as riders careen through sharp corners, twists and turns as they travel the winding track. Mighty meteors fly all around and silver meteors shower as riders zip through the cosmos scenery.

The feeling of "light-speed" thrills is heightened by the winding maze of track -- and sheer darkness -- inside the massive, man-made mountain. The white-knuckle adventure ends as the rocket pods re-enter the docking station ready to share the thrill of space travel with the next group of space explorers.

Space Mountain pays tribute to Walt Disney's fascination with space travel, exploring and discovery. The creative founder of the company that bears his name hosted and produced many classic television shows that featured space travel and the early pioneers of space and planetary exploration.

It is because of Disney's fascination with space, the future and discovery that each Disney resort around the world features a Tomorrowland-like area and Space Mountain attraction.
