The film took four years to make, with 40 animators working on 330,000 drawings; with 14 sequences, 1039 separate scenes and 750 backgrounds.
In the scene where Penny tries to run away, the animation is taken from The Jungle Book. Animation from Bambi was used in the "Someone's Waiting For You" scene.
Rufus the cat is a caricature of Disney animator Ollie Johnston.
The film was based on two books by Margery Sharp: "The Rescuers" and "Miss Bianca."
The song "Someone's Waiting for You," written by Sammy Fain, Carol Connors, and Ayn Robbins, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.
The escuers' names are: Bernard, Miss Bianca, Ellie Mae, Evinrude, Luke, Gramps, Deadeye, Deacon and Digger.
This was the first of Disney's animated features to have a sequel made.
Look closely at the wall of the Rescue Aid Society and see if you can see the Mickey Mouse watch on the wall.
Quotes
Bernard: We gotta find her and help her.
Rufus the Cat: Yeah, but two little mice! Wha - what can you do?
Rufus the Cat: What's wrong, Penny honey?
Penny: Nothing.
Rufus the Cat: Come on now, come on. No secrets. You tell old Rufus, huh?
Penny: Well, it was adoption day at the orphanage.
Rufus the Cat: Well... what happened?
Penny: A man and lady came and looked at me, but they choosed a little red-headed girl. She was prettier than me.
Rufus the Cat: Aw, sh-sh-she couldn't be! You listen to me, darling. You're something extra special.
Penny: No I'm not.
Rufus the Cat: Why, some day a mamma and a pappa will come to the orphanage looking for a pretty lil' girl, just like you.
Penny: Honest?
Rufus the Cat: I'll bet my whiskers on it.
Madame Medusa: You get down there and find the big diamond, or you will never see that teddy again!
