The Sword in the Stone

The film is set in medieval times and follows the story of 11 year old Arthur, who is called Wart, and lives in the castle of Sir Ector where he's an apprentice squire to Sir Kay.

After the King of England dies, a sword appears embedded in a stone, in a cathedral churchyard in London. The stone is inscribed "Who so pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil is rightwise king born of England."

Merlin the Magician begins to teach young Wart the basic truths of life, by turning him into various animals. But he runs into the evil Madam Mim who tries to destroy him. Merlin and Mim have a duel and turn each other into different animals, but Merlin outwits her and wins.

Wart attends a great tournament that is being held to pick a new king, as Sir Kay's squire. But he forgets Kay's sword, and when he runs back to the inn to get it, finds that the inn is locked. He sees the sword in the stone and innocently pulls it out, not realising the significence. The knights question where he got the sword and he proves himself by removing the sword from the stone over again. He is proclaimed King Arthur and Merlin returns to reassure him when he has doubts over his ability.

79 minutes long.

Fun Facts

The film is based on a book written by T.H. White in 1939, which is based on Arthurian legend. Most historians agree the real King Arthur is probably based on the 6th-century A.D. British war chief Roman Artorius.
The Sword in the Stone contains a lot of references to the '60s, including a spoof of a TV commercial.
It inspired the Sword in the Stone Ceremony, led by Merlin, at the Disney Theme Parks.
The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1963 for Best Music, Scoring Of Music, Adaptation Or Treatment.
The songs in the film were written by the legendary Sherman brothers, Richard and Robert.

Quotes

Sir Ector: I hope you don't go in for any of that black magic.
Merlin: Oh, no, no. Never touch the stuff.

Merlin: Now Mi-Mim, n-no dragons, remember?
Madame Mim: Did I say no purple dragons? Did I?

Madame Mim: Sounds like someone's sick. How lovely. I do hope it's serious. Something dreadful.

Archimedes the Owl: Now then, boy. Flying is not just some crude, mechanical process. It is a delicate art. Purely aesthetic. Poetry of motion. And the only way to learn it is to do it.
