Bayeux the Miraculous

  • Visit the world famous Queen Mathilda tapestry also known as the Bayeux Tapestry, displayed inside an impressive 18th-century building which was a seminary until 1970. This incredible piece of Norman art tells the story of the conquest of England, culminating with the battle of Hastings in 1066. It is displayed in 58 scenes stretched out over 230 feet. The visit also includes numerous videos as well as a fascinating film explaining the work's historical background.
  • Continue your tour on foot as you wander around quaint Bayeux City including the Notre Dame Cathedral which was built in 1077, along with many medieval and renaissance houses which have all been lovingly restored.
  • Re-board your coach and drive to Manor Grainville for a complimentary beverage (coffee or local products).
  • Afterwards, take the approximate 45-minute return drive to Cherbourg.

Beaches of Normandy

  • Drive to the town of St. Laurent sur Mer and visit the American Cemetery.
  • Overlooking the eastern end of Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery holds the bodies of 9,387 soldiers who came from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean to liberate Western Europe from the Germans. This immense place of memory and reflection is also a site of calm and serenity. View the graves of some of the 307 unknown soldiers or visit the resting places of the more famous soldiers—such as the Niland brothers, the family who inspired the film "Saving Private Ryan"—as well as the 3 Medals of Honor winners, one of whom is General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. Note: This tour includes approximately 0.3 miles of walking at a steady pace, part of which will be on cobblestones and/or uphill.
  • After your photo stop, continue to Omaha beach and the Memorial Museum.
  • Approximately 34,000 soldiers of the 1st, 2nd and 29th Infantry Divisions landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Visit the Omaha Beach Museum, situated at one of the strategic beach exits, code-named "Dog 3" on D-Day. On display, see a large collection of uniforms, vehicles and arms of all calibers as well as one of the types of landing craft used during the landings.
  • Continue to the Pointe du Hoc for a photo stop and re-live the exploits of the 2nd Battalion of the U.S. Rangers. The taking of Pointe du Hoc was a long and laborious fight, with the Rangers being left to fend for themselves 2 days longer than had been planned.
  • After a truly moving tour, take the approximate 60-minute drive back to the ship.

La Hague Coastline

  • Discover the coastline of La Hague, including the medieval Manor house and wild cliffs of Landemer, birthplace of the famous painter Jean François Millet, author of Angelus and the Gleaners.   • Enjoy a photo stop in Le Hable, in Omonville-la-Rouge, a small fishing harbor with a beautiful panorama.
  • Continue your drive along St. Martin's bay and Omonville-la-Petite, Jacques Prévert's village (the French author of "Autumn Leaves"), on the way to the Port Racine, the smallest harbor of France.
  • Enjoy a photo stop in Goury, located on the Cape of the Hague. View the lighthouse in the sea, Le Raz Blanchard, standing strong against one of the strongest and most dangerous currents in the world. From your vantage point you can also see Alderney, one of the five Channel Islands.
  • Then you will enjoy the visit at the SNSM (Station Nautique de Sauvetage en Mer). The sea rescue station was created in 1870 in order to help and save fishermen caught in the strong current.
  • Take a 20-minute photo stop at Nez de Voidries at the top of the cliffs (128m high). Enjoy the panoramic views of the Channel Islands, Vauville bay and Cape Flamaville.
  • Afterwards, take a 30-minute drive back to Cherbourg.

Mont Saint Michel

Mont St. Michel was built over several centuries on a rock in the sea that has been considered sacred since the third century B.C. At low tide, it is surrounded by bare sand stretching many miles in the distance; 6 hours later, at high tide, the same expanse is under water.   • Enjoy a magnificent view of the bay and surrounding salt marshes from the ramparts of the medieval town walls; stroll the narrow, winding cobblestone streets lined with 15th and 16th century buildings; learn the history of the great abbey illustrated by its various architectural styles. Built between sand and sky, this marvel of the western world represents one of the most impressive monuments of the Middle Ages. A great feat of monastic architecture, the abbey is built upon the bay's lonesome rock and becomes completely isolated at high tide when the tiny island seems to emerge out of the water.
  • Your guide will escort you from the outer gates through the town and up the main street to the top of the rock where the abbey is located.
  • Have approximately 2.5 hours of free time for lunch, independent sightseeing and shopping. Your guide will suggest possible walking itineraries through the ramparts, museums and the bustling, narrow streets below.

Sea Museum and Discover the Hidden Secrets of Cherbourg

Tatihou Island and Vauban Tower

  • Next, you will visit the island's Maritime Museum and the UNESCO World Heritage listed Vauban Tower, together with its impressive fortifications. Vauban has a very long history, including being used in the First and Second World Wars.
  • The visit will be followed by approximately one hour of free time to explore Le Lazaret house, the botanical gardens and bird's observatory, the lighthouse and the harbor.
  • Re-board the amphibian vehicle for the ride back to the mainland and then take the approximate 35-minute drive back to Cherbourg.

Designed by the architect Cotentin, this garden is a succession of rooms of greenery, in a unique tropical setting, overhanging the sea. Here you will have a 30-minute break to enjoy a beverage (coffee, soft drink or water) and a croissant or local pastry.
