Cozumel Tips

Although the main currency is the Peso, US dollars are widely accepted, and many restaurants show prces in both Pesos and Dollars. Although most vendors will give change in Pesos.

Traveller's Cheques (US Dollars, Euros, Sterling) can be cashed in at most banks and exchange bureaux (apart from on Sundays), although some places may want to see two forms of ID. Major credit and debit cards are widely accepted.

Carlos 'n' Charlies, and Hard Rock Cafe are popular places to eat.

Haggle in the shops to get the best prices. It's acceptable practice to start at half the advertised cost and meet halfway up.

Stick to drinking bottled rather than tap water, and don't have ice in your drinks.

Food hygiene at street vendors may not be up to the standards at restaurants.

If you get a taxi, confirm the price with the driver before setting off.

Scooter hire is available but not recommended for safety reasons.

Be wary of being approached by time share salesmen offering free car rentals or other incentives to get you to attend a presentation.

Keep an eye on valuables and cameras at all times, as sadly thieves prey on cruise ship tourists.

It's customary to tip 10-15% in restaurants.

Be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen and keep it topped up through the day, especially after going in the water, as the sun is extremely strong in this tropical climate.
