Gibraltar Tips

English is the main language, but Spanish is also spoken.

The official currency is the Gibraltar Pound £, which is exchangeable with the UK pound sterling at par value. The Euro is also accepted at many shops. Although credit cards are widely accepted, payments under 10 Euros are normally made with cash.

If service in a restaurant has been good, it's polite to tip 4-5% of your bill. € 0,20-0,30 is the recommended tip amount for taxi rides under € 20.

There is no sales tax in Gibraltar, meaning good deals can be found on many items. Leading retailers from the UK have stores in Gibraltar. Shops are usually open from 10am - 6pm.

The Barbary Macaques appear to be friendly and playful, but they are wild animals and have been known to bite or run away with handbags, food and cameras. There is a 500 Euro fine for feeding them.

Common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), and be aware that pickpockets may be operating.
