Ketchikan is located along the Tongass Narrows, at the foot of Deer Mountain, on Revillagigedo Island, and is the southeasternmost sizable city in Alaska. Named Ketchikan Creek, which flows through the town, the city is known as the "Salmon Capital of the World."

Major attractions in the area are the Misty Fjords National Monument and the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, which can be found at three major locations: Saxman Village, Totem Bight, and the Totem Heritage Center.

It is one of the rainiest cities in North America with just over 160 inches of average annual precipitation, although it's usually lighter and more sporadic in summer months.
