Madeira Tips

Portugese is the official language, but many people also speak English. However, locals always appreciate it if visitors to their island have made an effort to speak a little bit of their language. Useful Portugese phrases can be found here.

The currency is the Euro, and you'll need to exchange your currency for Euros if you wish to shop or dine in the city (unless using credit cards). Credit cards are usually accepted in restaurants and stores, and ATMs can be found around the island.

Some restaurants include a service charge as standard. For those that don't, it's customary to tip 5-10% for good service.

Taxis are readily available on the island, at taxi stations, or you can hail them in the street. Those in Funchal are metered cabs. Outside of the capital they work on a mileage basis, with pre-set prices for routes. These prices are listed on the back of the driver's or front passenger seat.

It's customary to tip taxi drivers 10% of the fare.

Although a mainly safe place to visit, common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), and be aware that pickpockets may be operating.
