Pompeii
On August 24, 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the nearby town Pompeii in ash and soot, killing 20000 people, and preserving the city in its state from that fateful day. What remains of Pompeii is an excavation site and outdoor museum of the ancient Roman settlement. The city is preserved in such detail, with tables, paintings and lavish homes being frozen in time. It remains a wonderful opportunity to see how the Romans lived two thousand years ago.
Note that the ground is uneven to walk on, and good comfortable footwear is advised.
By train, on the Circumvesuviana Napoli-Sorrento line it takes 30 to 40 minutes to get to Pompeii from Naples.
