Naples Tips

Italian is the official language. Find some useful Italian phrases here.

The currency is the Euro. Although credit cards are widely accepted, payments under 10 Euros are normally made with cash.

Shops usually close for lunch, from 1:30-4pm.

Service charges aren't added to the final bill, and it's customary to tip for good service. 4-5% in restaurants, and 20 to 30 Euro cents for a taxi ride under 20 Euros.

Taxis are readily available, either at the port or hail one in the street.

Naples has an underground rapid transit railway system, the Metro.

The main general train station is Napoli Centrale, which is located in Piazza Garibaldi. From here you can catch a train to Rome in under an hour.

Ferries operate from the port to locations including Capri, Ischia, Amalfi and Sorrento.

You can also use the jetfoil terminal to visit Capri, which is a 10-minute walk from the port.

Naples has a bad reputation for safety and visitors should take the following precautions-
Don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc).
Keep your bag secured and the strap across your body rather than just over your shoulder.
Beware of pickpockets.
Carry your wallet in a front pocket.
Don't leave valuables out on tables where they can be snatched.
Don't wear expensive watches or jewelry.
Don't wander down small dark alleys, especially in the Spanish Quarter.
Watch out for fake public service vehicles.
A lot of thieves operate around the main train station.
