Norwegian Sea Explorers

Drive through the capital of Norway to the Bygdoy peninsula and its many museums.
Visit the Kon-Tiki Museum, home of the balsa raft used by modern-day adventurer Thor Heyerdahl to cross the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. The museum's mascot is a whale shark named Tom, who followed Thor Heyerdahl and his team during their 100 plus days at sea. Discover the secrets of the museum on a family-friendly guided tour or you may choose to explore the museum independently. Note: This tour includes approximately 0.4 miles of walking at a leisurely pace, part of which will be uphill, including stairs. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Continue to the Fram Museum, where you will climb on board the world's most famous polar exploration ship, the "Fram". Built in 1892, it was described as "the world's sturdiest vessel" and sailed to both the northernmost and the southernmost points of the globe. The ship is displayed in its original condition with the interior and objects perfectly preserved. The museum also has a representative selection of animals from the polar regions including polar bears, penguins and moscus ox.
"The Colonel" was the most eager of all the dogs on Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole in 1911. His tasks take you around the museum, up and down the stairs, to the main decks and down to the cabins. You will have to answer questions to be able to finish the puzzle and find the solution word. Your effort will be rewarded with a prize.
After an exciting excursion you will return to your ship.

Hadeland Glass Works and Viking Ships

Drive through the city center to Bygdoy Peninsula and your first stop, the Viking Ship Museum. View three well-preserved Viking long ships, dating from 800-900 AD. Rejoin the coach and travel through suburbs and farmland to the 230-year old Hadeland Glassworks.
During your visit, learn about the glassworks' history and watch glass blowers at work creating beautiful pieces of art from sand and molten glass.
Enter the candle and pewter workshops, where you will enjoy a hands-on experience as you choose your colors and dye your own candle. Take it home as a memento of your stay in Norway.
Enjoy a 3 course lunch, served along with coffee/tea, one soft drink or glass of wine/beer per person in a local establishment. Guest may visit the glass shop for gifts and souvenirs.
After approximately 1-hour drive through the Norwegian landscape, reach the Holmenkollen Viewpoint. Admire the view over Oslo, the fjord and the breathtaking surroundings. You will also have a sneak peak of the brand new ski jump which is built for the 2011 World Cup.
Return to the ship, after your visit to Holmenkollen.

Take a scenic 20-minutes walk from the ship along the waterfront to Oslo's City Hall where the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony takes place every year. Situated by the harbor in downtown Oslo, the Nobel Peace Center is housed in a former railway station built in 1872. All the Peace Prize laureates are presented in an exhibit, the Nobel Field, comprised of 96 display screens set in a "garden" of 1,000 fiber-optic lights. Your attention may also be captured by the interactive magic book, which educates you about Alfred Nobel and is intriguing for visitors of all ages. This summer's special exhibition is about the 4 South African Nobel Peace Prize laureates, Albert Lutuli, Desmond Tutu, Frederik Willem de Klerk and Nelson Mandela. Note: This tour includes approximately 1.5 miles of walking at a steady pace, part of which will be on cobblestones and/or uphill, including stairs. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Take part in the special family program which contains tasks for every family and will inspire Guests of all ages. Kids may travel with their own "peace passport around the world," learning about the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates and receiving a stamp at each station.
Have some free time to walk around in the museum or to buy a special gift in the museum's shop.
Return to your ship with an approximate 30-minute walk passing through the old Akershus Fortress.

Drive approximately 30 minutes through the impressive capital city of Norway and pass the City Hall, the National Theater and the Royal Palace on your way from the ship to Bygdoy Peninsula. At the Viking Ship Museum, see 3 authentic Viking long ships, as well as items recovered from burial mounds of chieftains around the Oslofjord. These well-preserved artifacts, dating from 800 AD, were unearthed during 19th-century excavations. Note: No photography or filming is allowed at the Viking Ship Museum.
Next, enjoy a tour through the Kon-Tiki Museum, home to the balsa raft used by modern-day adventurer Thor Heyerdahl to cross the Pacific from Peru to Polynesia in 1947. Also see the papyrus boat, RA II, which Heyerdahl sailed across the Atlantic in 1970.
Visit the popular Norwegian Maritime Museum, which provides a unique insight into the Norwegians' relationship with the sea. There are hundreds of model boats and a new attraction featuring Ivo Caprino's Super-videograph (a wide-angle film), that provides a unique perspective on the museum's collections.

Take an approximate 20-minute narrated scenic drive through this impressive capital city and pass by some of the more prestigious architectural highlights, including the Parliament Building, the National Theater and the Royal Residence. Visit the Vigeland Sculpture Park, a fascinating 80-acre outdoor gallery containing 150 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland. Funded by the city, this master sculptor created a wonderful world of human and animal figures in stone, iron and bronze. Among them is a striking depiction of the human life cycle that features a 50-foot obelisk comprised of more than 100 linked forms. Note: As with many European sculptures, the nude human form is featured.
Next, stop at Holmenkollen for a breathtaking view of Oslo and its fjord. Holmenkollen is also home to one of the world's oldest ski jumps, which was used in the 1952 Winter Olympics and was recently replaced by a new structure, which will be used for the Word Championships to be held in Oslo in 2011.
Visit the Ski Museum at Holmenkollen; the world's oldest museum specializing in the history of skiing. It illustrates 4,000 years of skiing history with rock carvings, skis from the Viking era and skis from throughout Norway that showcase local traditions.

Oslo Walking Tour with City Hall

Walk along the pier, past a statue of Franklin D. Roosevelt that overlooks Oslo's harbor. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
Stop at the City Hall for an approximate 40-minute inside visit. This modern landmark contains works by some of Norway's most distinguished artists and includes frescoes, woodcarvings and sculptures.
Leave the City Hall for a short walk to a local delicatessen shop. Taste one of the local specialties, goat cheese and enjoy a soft drink.
Continue your walk and stop in front of the National Theater.
Pass statues of famous Norwegians and the former residence of Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen before reaching the Royal Palace and its surrounding garden.
Proceed to the main street, Karl Johan, and pass the University while learning more about Henrik Ibsen. Follow in his footsteps to the Grand Café, which was the meeting place of Oslo's "Bohemians" in the 1890s.
Return to the ship after walking through the Akershus Fortress, once a medieval castle and royal residence. The site offers wonderful photo opportunities overlooking the harbor.
Take the short walk back to the ship.

Scenic Oslo

Begin your overview of Oslo by passing the 13th-century Akershus Fortress, once used as the main defense for the city of Oslo. It now houses a museum with a small section reserved for military use. Note: This tour is designed for Guests with limited mobility or difficulty walking. It has the least walking of Oslo shore excursions and consists of sightseeing from the coach and 2 photo stops. Guests will have to walk approximately 300 yards from the ship's gangway to the bus.
Continue toward the city center and a photo stop at the new Opera House, opened in 2008.
Proceed onto the 2 main streets of Oslo, Stortingsgate and Karl Johan. Pass the Parliament Building and the oldest part of the university dating back to 1813.
At the top of the hill see the Royal Palace, current residence of the royal family and continue to Vigeland Sculpture Park. Note: As with many European sculptures, the nude human form is featured.
Visit the viewpoint at Holmenkollen to enjoy the view over the city, fjord and islands.
Return toward the city center along the Royal Park and Stortorget before returning to the ship.

RIB Boat to Oscarsborg Fortress

Walk approximately 5 minutes to the RIB Boats. Note: This tour includes approximately 1 mile of walking at a steady pace, part of which will be on cobblestones and/or uphill. Wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes.
Receive your life jacket and wind-and waterproof jackets and pants. Note: Although Guests are provided with weatherproof clothing, Guests' clothing and shoes may get wet.
Hop aboard the RIB Boat and cruise close to the shoreline towards Oscarsborg. The Oscarsborg Fortress lies on the island of Kaholmene, approximately 18.5 miles South of Oslo.
Upon arrival at Oscarborg, follow your guide on a 60-minute tour through the fortress. The island's first fortification was built in 1640 and extended in 1856 when it was considered to be Northern Europe's strongest fortress. During the Second World War, it played an important role in the defense against the first German attack in 1940. After a refreshment break, cruise around the islands and head back to Oslo.

Be introduced to the king of Vika who will ask for your full attention. Actors, action, excitement and fun for Guests of all ages will follow on your 2-hour cruise aboard a traditional wooden schooner.
Discover the Oslo Fjord as you pass by the new Opera House, the museum-dotted peninsula Bygdoy and many small islands.
