Tallinn Tips

Estonian is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in the tourist areas.

The currency is the Estonian kroon (EEK). Kroons can only be exchanged / converted inside the country. Currency can be exchanged in any of the local banks, large hotels, and in the Old Town's main post office, it's advisable not to exchange on the street. Major credit cards are accepted in the larger stores and restaurants.

The port is a 15 minute drive from the city center. Taxis are readily available and run by meter. There are some rip-off taxi companies that prey on tourists and charge hig prices. Reputable taxi companies include: Tallink, Tulika, Taksopark, Sõbra, Marabu and Krooni.

Buses and trolleys are available, but can be crowded and infrequent. Tickets can be bought at stalls near public transport stops. The "Tallinn Card," can be purchased at the tourist office, and includes free local public transport and entry into most attractions.

Although a relatively safe place to visit, pickpockets do operate in the city and common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), keep wallets in front pockets, and be vigilent in crowded places.
