Valletta Tips

Many people speak both Maltese and English, both of which are the official languages. Here are some useful Maltese phrases.

The Euro is the official currency , but many restaurants and large stores will accept US Dollars. Major credit cards are also accepted in most places. Banks and foreign currency exchange bureaux can be found in many places on the island.

The Valletta peninsula is only a couple of kilometres in length, so the best way to get around is on foot. The city is built on a ridge, and it can be steep in parts, but the main tourist attractions are along the main street (Triq ir-Republika) which does not involve steep hills.

There are two bus routes that run around Valletta, the 98 runs clockwise and the 198 counterclockwise. They depart from Valletta Terminus every 30 minutes.

Tourists may enjoy renting one of the horsecarts (Karozzin), but should haggle over the price.

Taxis are also available and can be found at the exit area of the terminal. The White Taxis can be pre-paid on the pier in exchange for a voucher to present to your driver.

When visiting any churches or temples, tourists should wear clothes that cover the shoulders and knees.

Common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), keep bags secured and worn with a shoulder strap across your body. and be aware that pickpockets may be operating.
