The official language is German. Here are some useful German phrases.

The currency is the Euro. Major credit cards are accepted in most places, although payments of under 40 Euros are usually made with cash.

It's customary to tip 5 - 10% of the bill in restaurants, bars and taxis.

The train station isn't far from the dock. Rostock is only a 20 minute train ride away.

Tickets can be purchased from vending machines at the train station or shops which allow you to travel all day on any of the trams, buses or on certain ferries.

Common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), keep bags secured and worn with a shoulder strap across your body. and be aware that pickpockets may be operating.
