Theatrical song and dance, animation, video and stunning special effects combine for a dazzling salute to Disney's tradition of storytelling magic in "The Golden Mickeys," a live stage show premiering inside the Storybook Theatre at Hong Kong Disneyland.
Featuring many of Disney's and Disney/Pixar's most famous characters, "The Golden Mickeys" takes on the glamorous feel of a ritzy Hollywood awards show where memorable silver-screen Disney moments are recognized. Storybook Theatre, located in Fantasyland, seats 1,000 guests.
The 25-minute musical celebration features a cast of 24 singers and dancers. The show is presented multiple times daily.
"The Golden Mickeys" features "Bebe," an up-and-coming entertainment journalist who is reporting "Live from the Storybook Theater in Fantasyland!" As the evening progresses, the young reporter is swept up in Disney magic and the childlike fun of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy and their friends. ("Bebe" conducts her "live interviews" and narration in Cantonese; the show's songs are performed in English.)
Throughout the performance, "The Golden Mickeys" honors friendship, heroism, adventure and romance. Serving as show hosts are Disney's "Fab Five" group of characters -- Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. Songs pay tribute to animated classics, including hits from "Lilo and Stitch," "Tarzan," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "Toy Story 2" and "Mulan."
Dazzling special effects make the "The Golden Mickeys" an exciting show for Hong Kong audiences. Vibrant animated backdrops whisk guests from high above Notre Dame Cathedral in one scene and dramatic sets create a 3-D illusion as films race across stage-size screens in another. An under-the-sea setting from Disney's animated film "The Little Mermaid" also comes to life before guests' eyes.
"The Golden Mickeys" was created by Disney Creative Entertainment, based in Burbank, Calif., under the direction of creative director Shelby Jiggetts-Tivony. Diane Paulus, a well-known musical theatre and opera director, directed the show. Paulus is currently the director of "The Donkey Show," which is in its sixth year running in New York City and has toured internationally to London, Edinburgh, France and Madrid.
The musical is part of the live entertainment presented year-round in the parks and hotels by the Hong Kong Disneyland Entertainment team led by Laurie Jordan, vice president of Hong Kong Disneyland Entertainment. Jordan has been staging Disney shows for 15 years at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Disneyland Paris Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort.
