TREE OF LIFE
|
Standing prominently towards the centre of Discovery Island is the unmistakable and iconic "Tree of Life", an awe inspiring structure every bit as impressive as Cinderella's Castle at Magic Kingdom or Epcot's Geosphere. At 14 stories tall and branching out over 160 feet, its no wonder the tree's support structure required an engineering plan similar to those used in building offshore oil rigs! 103,000 leaves in a variety of colours create the tree's foliage and further down, a 50ft wide trunk leads towards great, sprawling roots that expand 170 feet in diameter. Its not until you get up close however, that the full majesty of the tree reveals itself. Hundreds of animal species have been carved into the tree's exterior, the handiwork of a team of 20 artists lead by Zolst Hormay that took almost 18 months to complete. There are over 300 species to discover, from the mighty Lion through to playful dolphins. A great way to view the tapestry of animal carvings are via the Discovery Island Trails, a meandering pathway that leads through the root system, but is also filled with hidden landscapes and exhibits such as otters and Cockatoo's.
But that’s not all, The Tree Of Life also sits atop a 430-seater theatre that’s home to the 3-D attraction, "It's Tough To Be A Bug!" - A humorous special effects experience that introduces you to the world of some of our planets lesser-known wild creatures, insects…from a bug's point of view of course.
