The
miniature carousel located in the lobby of Disney's BoardWalk Inn
was hand-crafted in the 1920s at Coney Island by M.C. Illions, a master
designer and manufacturer of merry-go-rounds.
The "Hippocampus Electrolier" ( Hippocampus is
a mythological creature; electrolier is a chandelier for electric
lamps) in the Resort lobby features fanciful carousel animals that
are half horse and half sea creature. The chandelier weighs 3,000 pounds
(1.5 tons) and is finished entirely in 22-karat gold leaf, hand-cut
Austrian crystal and custom-blown glass.
The
crystal globe at the bottom of the Hippocampus Electrolier chandelier
is a time capsule scheduled for opening during the 50th Anniversary
celebration of the Walt Disney World® Resort.
Disney's BoardWalk Resort opened on July
1, 1996.
Luna Park, the free-form
pool at Disney's BoardWalk Resort, is named after an early amusement
park in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and features Keister Coaster, a 200-ft
water slide in the form of a classic wooden roller coaster.
