Barcelona is located in the Catalonia region, where the official language is Catalan, although Spanish is also widely spoken. Useful phrases are listed here.

The currency is the Euro. Although credit cards are widely accepted, payments under 10 Euros are normally made with cash. Foreign currency exchange is available at the airport.

The best way to get around Barcelona is by taxi, which are readily available. Taxis offer flat rates to and from the terminal, but using metered taxis is advisable.

Common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), and be aware that pickpockets may be operating.

Best buys are fine leather shoes, fashionable handbags, designer clothes and exquisite Catalan ceramics.
