State Russian Museum
This historical museum is located in the fabulous Mikhailovsky Palace, and is devoted mainly to Russian fine art through the ages. Its halls retain the opulent ornamentation since the days the palace was first built in 1895.
St. Isaac's Cathedral
Built in 1818 and a major attraction in the city, it is the third highest cupola cathedral in the world. Anyone who is willing to climb the 400 steps to the observation deck will be rewarded with great views of the city.
Peter & Paul Fortress
The fortress was built in 1703 to protect the area from attack, and was later used as a high-security political jail for high-profile prisoners such as Dostoyevsky, Gorky and Trotsky. The church is where many of the Romanov Czars of Russia are buried.
