San Francisco Tips

San Francisco has one of the best public transport networks in the country.

Muni operate the streetcars, metro, buses and cable cars within San Francisco city. Tourists may want to purchase an all day Muni passport which is good on all Muni services, including Cable Cars.

Taxis are inefficient and expensive, and can be difficult to hail in the street, so aren't the best way to get around.

Although car hire is available it's not recommended, as driving in the city can be problematic, with steep, winding streets, expensive and scarce parking, and a confusing one-way street system.

Fisherman's Wharf is one of the best places to buy touristy souvenirs. Specialist boutiques can be found on Nob Hill, Union Street, Fillmore Street, and Chestnut Street.

If you are planning visiting Fisherman's Wharf, consider buying a Wharf Pass which includes 10 attractions, bay cruises and sightseeing tours. Website

As with any large city, pickpocketing and other petty crimes can occur. Common sense is advised when it comes to safety - don't carry large amounts of cash, or important documents (passport, etc), keep bags secured and worn with a shoulder strap across your body. If you hire a car do not leave any valuables in it when parked, as car break-ins are very common.
