 Cherbourg
|
Cherbourg is located in the Normandy region of France, and is an important city for its harbor. The port is split into four main sections:
- commercial – cruise liners and ferries
- marina – pleasure boats
- naval base – home to submarine manufacturers
- fishing – both commercial and sport
The best part for tourists to explore is the marina, with its sidewalks that lead straight into the heart of the city.
It was once known as the "Gateway to America," and was the first stop of RMS Titanic after it left Southampton, England. The city has a fascinating history, having been inhabited and invaded by Celts, Gauls, Romans, Saxons and Vikings.
